For over forty years, photographer José Galvez has documented the everyday
lives of Latinos around the United States. A visionary,
his work has garnered the highest acclaim. Galvez’s personal story is as
compelling as his photographs. Born into the Mexican barrios of Tucson,
Galvez had a determination to work hard and move beyond what others had
decided would be his future. And yet, he has never forgotten his roots.
"At a certain point, potential once unleashed even in the smallest
way takes on a life of its own. And this is what happened to me. It
was natural for me to look around my own home, my own family, my own
barrio and begin to photograph what I saw. This talent, though, once
I tapped it, began to flow from me. It became an integral part of who
I am."
Beyond the usual PowerPoint lecture
Over many years Galvez has delighted audiences with his stories of struggle
and triumph. He now debuts a new presentation of image and word perfect
for keynotes. In SHINE, Galvez’s stunning photographs complement a talk
that encourages listeners to:
unlock potential
overcome obstacles
pursue new ventures
mentor the next generation

Kudos
...[T]hat was a great presentation
you did for us. Not only did the photographs depict the daily struggles
for Hispanics but also of the pride in their heritage depicted in dance,
costumes, music, and customs.... I was particularly impressed with
the impact that Hispanics have had serving in the Armed Service.
Your photos demonstrate the pride in serving and representing the
USA. Thank you again for your time in showing a piece of the Hispanic
culture and helping the Durham VA Medical Center understand more
about diversity in the workplace and of the people we serve. Dennis Bongiorni, PT, DPT,
Supervisor, Physical Therapy,

Jose has presented his story and images on Duke's campus a number of
times over the past several years, and each time he has captured the
audience with his sincerity and quiet wisdom, which exude from his photographs
